On n’examinera pas même si les travaux des plantations sont au-dessus des forces des Européens; après avoir vu les Français et les Anglais triompher des sables brûlants de l’Egypte, on ne peut plus regarder comme trop violent pour eux le travail des champs, dans un climat bien plus tempéré. Rendre la paix aux Colonies, anéantir le préjugé qui y avilit le cultivateur, voilà la tâche vraiment difficile; trouver ensuite des cultivateurs libres, en serait une bien moins pénible.

We shall not examine whether labour on plantations is beyond the powers of the Europeans. After having seen the French and the English overcome burning hot sands in Egypt, we can no longer think it too tough for them to work on farms in a more temperate climate. It is a really difficult task to return peace to the colonies, and to wipe out the prejudice against cultivators there. With this task accomplished, it would be even less difficult to find free cultivators.
