Ce n’est point cependant sur le prix intrinsèque que l’acheteur acide le sacrifices qu’il est disposé à faire pour se procurer une marchandise, c’est sur le besoin qu’il en a, comparé avec les facilités qu’il a pour s’en pourvoir ou pour y suppléer. De cette comparaison naît le prix relatif, ou celui qu’il est disposé à donner en échange.

It is not, however, on the basis of the intrinsic price but of the needs the purchaser has for a commodity, in comparison to the ease with which he could prepare it or substitute something else for it, that he calculates the sacrifice he is ready to make for the purpose of procuring it. From this comparison comes the relative price, or that which he is ready to give in exchange.
