(1) J’ai cru devoir donner le nom de capital immatériel à cette partie de la richesse nationale que possèdent certains capitalistes dont toute la fortune est dans un porte-feuille. Les espèces monnoyées [monnayées] avec lesquelles ils transfèrent leur propriété en sont le signe, les titres des créances qu’ils gardent par devers eux en sont le gage, mais leur propriété elle-même est immatérielle, ou plutôt ce n’est qu’un droit en participation sur des richesses plus solides dont d’autres sont les détenteurs.

(1) I have believed it necessary to give the name of intangible capital to that part of the national wealth which is in the possession of certain capitalists whose fortune is all in a portfolio. Coined money with which they transfer their property is the sign of the property, and bills of credit which they keep in hand are the security of it, but their property itself is intangible, or rather, only a right to a share of the firmer wealth held by others.
