(1) Il y avait eu avant cette Compagnie-là, deux autres privilèges exclusifs accordés pour le commerce de l’Inde, l’un en 1604 qui expira en 1627, l’autre en 1642, renouvelé en 1652. Mais ces deux Compagnies pour le commerce de l’Inde n’entreprirent jamais une seule expédition, elles n’eurent d’autre effet que d’empêcher pendant tour cet espace de temps les commerçons de se livrer à cette branche de trafic, (Mem. hist. et pol. sur le commerce de l’Inde, par Garonne aîné, p. 37.)

(1) Before the establishment of this company, there had been two other exclusive privileges accorded for trade with India, one of which was accorded in 1604 and expired in 1627, and the other of which was accorded in 1642 and was renewed in 1652. Nonetheless, those two companies for trade with India never tried an expedition, and had no other effect but to keep merchants from entering into this branch of trade in that period (Mémoire historique et politique sur le commerce de l’Inde, by Garonne the older, p. 37).
