Plus on consacre de capitaux à la culture de la terre, plus on peut augmenter ses produits; quand on considère tout ce que le maraicher retire de son sein, on croiroit [croirait] à cet égard ses facultés infinies. Tous les capitaux que possède aujourd’hui la France, ne suffiroient [suffiraient] pas pour porter son agriculture au terme de prospérité le plus élevé auquel elle puisse parvenir. Mais ce n’est point à présent qu’une pareille masse de capitaux peut être employée au service de l’industrie rurale; quand celle-ci en a absorbé la partie absolument nécessaire pour la nourriture de la population actuellement existante, on n’obtient plus des profits si considérables en consacrant de nouvelles richesses à fertiliser la terre, et les autres branches d’industrie réclament celles qui restent, par l’offre de profits proportionnés à l’importance de chacune. Lorsque la population et la richesse s’accroissent, le moment vient de nouveau de faire de plus grands sacrifices pour tirer plus de fruits de la terre, et l’augmentation de son produit brut marche d’un pas égal avec le perfectionnement des autres arts utiles.

The more capital is appropriated for culture of land, the more produce of land people can have. Considering all that which a market gardener reaps from his field, you might believe that land has infinite faculties in this respect. The whole capital France has today would not be sufficient for the arrival of the time of the highest prosperity that her agriculture can reach. But it is not at present that such a mass of capital can be employed at the service of the rural industry. If it has absorbed the completely necessary part of the capital for feeding the existent population, you no longer obtain so high profits from appropriating new wealth for improvement of land, and the other branches of industry demand the rest of the capital by offering profits in proportion to the importance of each branch. When the population and wealth grow, the new situation comes where you must make more sacrifice for a larger amount of the produce of land, and the increase of the gross produce keeps step with improvement of other useful arts.
