Les Européens ont appelé au secours des arts et de l’agriculture, les connaissances qu’ils ont reçues en héritage de leurs ancêtres, et qu’ils ont perfectionnées; ils ont réduit en science l’emploi des forces humaines, et ils ont réussi à faire de leurs bras, cent ou mille fois plus d’ouvrage, que n’en peuvent faire des Peuples grossiers et ignorants. Leurs enfants, qu’ils ont envoyés en Amérique, ont reçu d’eux comme pour dot, en sortant de la maison paternelle, l’ensemble des connaissances que leurs ancêtres avaient accumulées. Ces nouveaux fondateurs de nations, étaient donc bien plus favorisés que les premiers pères de nos Peuples d’Europe, qui avaient à lutter, bien moins contre l’âpreté du climat, et les difficultés de la culture, que contre leur propre ignorance et leur dénuement. Les Colons avaient centuplé leurs forces par l’expérience d’autrui; les premiers hommes ne connaissaient d’autres forces que celles qu’ils avaient reçues de la nature.

The Europeans made progress in arts and industry with the aide of the knowledge that they inherited from their ancestors and added to for themselves. They reduced the employment of human powers into science, and became able to accomplish one hundred or thousand times as great work with their hands as primitive and ignorant peoples can. Their children whom they sent to America received from them, like a dowry in leaving their paternal house, the knowledge as a whole that their ancestors had accumulated. These new founders of nations were, therefore, in a still more advantageous position than the earliest fathers of our European peoples, who had had to fight less against stark climates and cultural difficulties than against their own ignorance and poverty. The settlers reinforced their powers with the aid of experiences of others, while the earliest men had known no other powers than those with which nature had endowed them.
