Après avoir laissé pendant seize ans le commerce de l’Inde libre à tous les Français, le Gouvernement prit en 1785 le parti d’établir une troisième Compagnie des Indes, également revêtue d’un privilège exclusif: la révolution et la guerre maritime n’ont pas laissé poursuivre long-temps cette nouvelle expérience (6).

After keeping trade with India free and open to all French merchants for 16 years, the government decided in 1785 to establish a third India Company, also accorded an exclusive privilege; the revolution and the maritime war did not allowed the government to pursue this new project for a long time (6).
