LOZÈRE. Le Département de la Lozère n’a d’autres manufactures que celles de serges et petites draperies de Mende, Marvejols, et lieux environnants. Leur débit s’étend non-seulement dans toute la République, mais, en Italie, en Allemagne, et en Espagne. La douane ne peut donc protéger en aucune manière l’industrie de ce Département, qui dans un marché libre soutient la concurrence des fabricants étrangers, et ne la redoute pas (39).

LOZÈRE. The department of Lozère has no other manufacture than those of serge and small woollen cloth in Mende, Marvejols and neighbouring places. The market extends not only all over France but also to Italy, Germany, and Spain. Therefore, the customs can by no means protect the industry of this department, which in a free market manages to compete with foreign manufacturers and has no fear of the competition (39).
