La prospérité de toutes les Colonies fondées par les Européens, tient principalement au concours de trois circonstances, qu’on ne voit réunies que chez elles. En effet, elles sont peuplées d’hommes qui possèdent tous les perfectionnements des arts et de l’industrie, dont les mœurs sont cependant simples et laborieuses, et qui sont admis à partager des terres fertiles qui n’ont point de propriétaires.

The prosperity of all the colonies founded by the Europeans derives principally from the combination of three circumstances, which we cannot see united anywhere else. In fact, the colonies are occupied by those who have all dexterity in arts and industry, have nevertheless simple and laborious manners, and are allowed to possess a part of the fertile land that has no landlord.
